Most coffees originate from somewhere in the coffee belt region. Naturally this is where the conditions are most conducive to the development of the plant. In the "coffee belt" the climate is defined as tropical and sub tropical. In essence the Southern limit of the belt is the tropic of Capricorn and the Northern limit is the tropic of Cancer. There are approximately 12 significant coffee producing countries of which Brazil would be the largest. Currently the average annual coffee production from all over is about 150 million bags of which Brazil produces circa 55 million.
